Requirements For Obtaining A Building Permit
1. Complete the Building Permit Application (applications are available online under documents)
2. Fee for Building Permit (revised fee structure 1/21 is listed under documents)
3. Indicate the location of the new structure with certified survey map and location of pin sets
(3a) Reference all four sides of proposed building to property lines
(3b) If there are buildings currently on the site include those setbacks along with indicating their location in relation to the proposed new construction
(3c) Reference current well and septic or where proposed well and septic will be located
(3d) Water and wetland setbacks are determined By the DEC (518) 891-4050 or APA (518) 897-1300, it is the responsibility of the homeowner to provide a hard copy of their report with the application
All measurements should be from the property lines. (New construction need to be 10 feet from property lines and 50 feet from the center of the road). Review minimum lot requirement under Forestport Site Review Laws
4. All trusses and rafters need to be engineered by a Licensed New York State Professional Engineer or Architect to meet an 85LBS snow load capacity
5. All structures require detailed Plans
(5a) All new Dwelling need plans by a Licensed New York State Professional Engineer/Architect
(5b) Any structures over 1500 square feet must have plans by a Licensed New York State Professional Engineer or Architect
(5c) All structures not requiring a stamped plan must give a detailed description of how they plan on constructing project
6. Insurance
(6a) If you plan on constructing the building yourself, you need to fill out insurance exemption form (available online under documents)
(6b) If you are hiring contractor(s)I need a copy of proof of liability insurance and workers compensation

Requirements Needed to Obtain Septic Permit
1-Fill out all sections of Application Sewage Disposal System Review & Approval (forms are on
Forestport Town Webpage under documents)
2- Check made out to the Town of Forestport for New Septic System or Repair (new systems $80 repair
$50)
3-Survey map (engineers need to reference these items when designing the system)
3A-Setbacks from property lines of all four sides of the proposed system (10-foot separation
from the neighboring property)
3B-Setbacks from structures currently or projected to be on the property
3C-Setbacks from your well or proposed well along with neighboring wells (100-foot separation)
3D-Setbacks from the roadway (50 feet from the center of the road)
3E-Setbacks from wetlands and waterways
PLEASE NOTE THAT WETLANDS AND WATER SETBACKS ARE DETERMINED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF
CONSERVATION OR THE ADIRONDACK PARK AGENCY AND IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO CONTACT
THEM AND PROVIDE YOUR ENGINEER WITH THAT INFORMATION FOR THEIR DESIGN)
4- ALL new septic systems need to have a stamped engineered design complying with all New York State
regulations and Forestport Site-Review Laws
5- Copy of proof of insurance and workers’ compensation from your contractor, if you are doing the
work yourself fill out the insurance exemption form (forms are online under documents)
I WILL NEED A HARD COPY OF ALL INFORMATION REQUESTED MAILED OR DROPPED OFF TO THE
TOWN OFFICE (if I am not there you can slide the requested information under my door or after hours
you can put it in the black drop box in front of the town office.
